Mauritania : Biram and Brahim are finally free!

Biram Dah Abeid and Brahim Ould Bilal, antislavery militants from Mauritania supported by our Emergency Fund for defenders, have been freed following a decision by the Supreme Court on 17 May. Arrested in November 2014 while participating in a peaceful protest to denounce the consequences of slavery in the Rosso region, the president and the vice-president of the IRA-Mauritania movement had been convicted to two years of unconditional imprisonment.

Resist: a Colombian lesson

The Colombian association Sembrar has received support from AEDH for almost 20 years and from the Foundation for Human Rights for two years. Since 2011, our organisation has supported the actions carried out by Sembrar in the South of the state of Bolivar, a region forgotten by the world where the local population, who live from the land, fishing and the exploitation of small gold mines, are faced at the same time with armed violence (between guerrillas, paramilitary groups and the Colombian army) and social violence (confiscation of the water by the large farming of palm, the deterioration of the environment by the illegal mining farms…). Jean-Pierre Aideguer, who visited the south of Bolivar in March with members of Sembrar, tells us about the reality that the population faces every day.

Colombia : peace agreements under way

Wednesday 23 June 2016 in Havana, the Colombian government and the guerrilla of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) declared an agreement on the next « bilateral and definitive cease fire». A major breakthrough in the resolution of the conflict, it paves the way for the signing of a peace agreement, negotiated between the two parties since November 2012.

Congo: Post-electoral violence

On the eve of the presidential elections (following a constitutional reform largely decried), the OCDH was concerned with the totalitarian drift of the Head of State (AEDH newsletter 213). The results of 20 March proved it right. Denis Sassou Nguesso was reelected for the third consecutive time following a badly organised ballot not recognised by the international community.
