Senegal : Hissène Habré’s trial, verdict in April 2017


"Historical" : is the adjective frequently used to describe the trial of the former dictator Hissène Habré. In May 2016, the Extraordinary African Chambers in Dakar sentenced him to life imprisonment for war crimes, crimes against humanity, torture and rape. He must also pay 30 000 euros in awards to each victim.

DEFI Project : Sharing successful experiences of the defence of the right of detainees in Central Africa

From the 26th to the 31st of January 2017, a platform to share experiences on the defence of the rights of detainees was held in Douala, Cameroon, as part of the DEFI project. Nine people participated in the event and represented their respective organisations : the Ligue des Droits et Libertés - LDL (Cameroon), Women’s Counselling Information Centre - WCIC (Cameroon) and the Voice of the Forgotten “La Voix des Oubliés” - LVO (Gabon). This event is part of a cycle of four events to share experiences organised by AEDH with the aim to develop good practices and to strengthen the capacity of Central African organisations.

Israel : Every day, increase of cynicism in human rights violations

In January 2017, two members of the Human Rights Foundation (FDH), AEDH’s partner, met in Jerusalem with association of human right’s defence, with which both AEDH and FDH work. In this country torn by dissension between Jews and Palestinians, these organisations work tirelessly for the respect of fundamental rights, often violated by the State. Gérard Ligier and Jean-Pierre Aideguer, members of FDH, spoke to us about the situation.

DRC : the State must protect the Pygmy population

AEDH implements the project APPEL* (Accompany of Pygmy People for the access to their rights and Encourage a reform of the property Law) together with two Congolese organisations, OCEAN and OSAPY. The purpose of this project is to defend and promote the rights of the Pygmy population in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The project entered its final year of a three-year lifespan. It is the occasion to reflect on the situation of this indigenous population of the Congolese forest, who see their rights regularly violated.
